Design Concept: The major concept that drove the design was the need for two points of entry between the existing Center and the new 7600 SF addition. Programmatically, this called for a continuous lobby linking the two entrances as well as the multipurpose space which was critical to the Center’s daily operations. The design team took advantage of the multipurpose room’s size to introduce daylighting via clerestory windows into the main lobby and circulation space provided by a central skylight that references the “beacon light of hope” mentioned by Martin Luther King, Jr. in his “I have a dream” speech. This skylight introduces natural light into the interior space during the day and transforms into an exterior feature at night, borrowing from interior lighting to emit a glow visible from outside the Center. Martin Luther King Jr’s quotes and images are used throughout the new expansion to honor his legacy and celebrate the seniors who use the space daily.
